Paper Architecture : The Art of Dissent in the Late Soviet Era

Federica Deo, DAStU, Politecnico di Milano, Università di Parma

The lecture explores the paradoxical relationship between repression and architectural creativity, focusing on the phenomenon of late Soviet period (1981–1991) known as Paper Architecture. In an environment of strict ideological control and bureaucratic constraints, a group of Soviet architects turned to speculative, unbuildable designs as a means of intellectual and artistic resistance. These visionary projects, expressed through international competition entries and conceptual drawings, challenged official norms and offered a critique of the limits of socialist system. By analyzing key works and figures of the movement, this lecture seeks to answer several questions: Do repressive systems produce greater architecture? What does Paper Architecture reveal about the relationship between power, imagination, and critique? What made this expression possible in a context of censorship? Through these questions, the lecture will reconsider the role of soviet architecture as a medium of critique and artistic defiance in a repressive state.

Federica Deo is post-doc fellowship at DAStU, Politecnico di Milano and lecturer in architectural history at the Università degli Studi di Parma. She earned her PhD in the History of Architecture from the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (2019). Her doctoral thesis focused on the work of the architect from Moscow Ilya Golosov, providing an analysis of the transition between the avant-garde period and Socialist Realism. She worked as a research fellow at the Politecnico di Milano, collaborating on the project “Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI” (2022-2023). Federica has also participated in several research projects related to the history of Italian contemporary architecture and contributed to the organization of several international conferences and exhibitions.
